Top Lightweight, Road Legal Track Monsters

Here is a list of top lightweight cars that a road legal as well as track monsters. These cars are so light that it would get any Lamborghini or Ferrari a run for its money. This list clearly proves that big engines and more horsepower don't necessarily mean fast as the majority of the cars on this list have small engines and low horsepower but they shine because of their power to weight ration and their low centre of gravity. But the most impressive thing about these machines is that they are all road legal so you can flaunt it on a date as well as enjoy it on the track. Some of the cars on the list might be hard to find and some might only be available in the used market, but most are available, new from the company itself with little to no waiting list.
Disclaimer: This list is in no particular order.
So without any further ado lets dive straight into it.

Lotus 3-Eleven
: This car is a hard-to-find car as its no longer available new. Lotus, in general, is known for its spectacular handling and being amazingly lightweight short wheel based car manufacturer. So when lotus decides to make a track monster that is also road legal, (despite the fact they no longer produce these) it had to make it to this list. It comes with a 3.5L engine that produces 410HP with only 2039lbs of weight, which means it does 0-60 in 3.3 seconds with a power to weight ratio of 443HP per tonne. Its top speed is 174MPH. It also comes in a race-ready version with is 460hp and 77lbs lighter but since it's not road legal we are not considering it.

Catherham7 620R
: Caterhams have been my favourites since I was a teenager. I think they are one of the most fun road/track cars at a reasonable price point since a very very long time. The 620R comings with a 2.0L engine producing 314BHP with a 0-60 of under 2.7 seconds, weighing only 1261lbs. The power ratio of the 620R is 547BHP per tonne.

Zenos E10R
: The British manufacturers E10R comes with a 2.3L turbocharged EcoBoost engine that produces 350BHP, weighing 700kgs which results in a 0-60 time of 3.0 seconds. The power to weight ratio of this car is 500BHP per tonne.

Elemental RP1
: This is a car produced by former Formula1 Mclaren engineers in the UK. Weighing only 595kg, it comes in a 2L(280BHP) Ecoboost and 2.3L(320BHP) Ecoboost option that does 0-60 in 2.8 and 2.6seconds respectively. The power to weight ratio on this car is 537BHP per tonne.

KTM X-bow/Crossbow
: The Ktm is one of the more popular models on this list. It comes with a 2.0L Tfsi engine that produces 360BHP and weighs only 1786lbs resulting in 3.6 seconds 0-60 time. The power to weight ratio of the X-bow is 443BHP per tonne. There is a GT4 version coming out but we are not sure if it is road legal or not but that will definitely give the others on this list a run for their money.

Rezvani Motors Beast Alfa
: This machine comes with a Rezvani/Cosworth 2.5L supercharged motor, producing 500 horses and weighs under 2000lbs. It comes with a 6-speed manual transmission and does 0-60 in 3.5 seconds with a top speed of 175mph. That is a power to weight ratio of 662 horsepower per tonne.

Ariel Atom 3RS
: Ariel Atoms have been around for a while and they are as popular as the KTM X-Bow. The Atom 3RS has a 2.4L Turbocharged Honda Engine that produces 425BHP and weighs only 1450lbs. The Estimated 0-60 is 2.1 seconds but please don't quote me on it. But the power-to-weight ratio on this would be 644BHP per tonne.

Donkervoort D8 GTO
: This car is a wannabe reincarnation of the 1950s Lotus 7 but with all the new technology. From The Caterham style halo, F-type style roofline, Aston Martin styled headlights, Audi styled front grille and scissor/gullwing styled doors, ac cobra inspired exhaust, 33 ford roadster inspired hood vents and yet this hotchpotch looks attractive.(OK, may be I am exaggerating the design cues.) But what is even more attractive is the specs. It comes with an Audi 2.5L 5 cylinder engine that produces 415BHP with under 700kgs of weight making the power to weight ratio of 592 ponies per tonne. It does 0-60 in under 2.6 seconds and a top speed exceeding 175Mph.

BAC Mono
: Now the Mono meets EU6D emissions regulations and is ready for the streets and tracks of Europe. It comes with a 2.3L 4cylinder turbocharged engine producing 332BHP, weighing 570Kgs it does 0-6 in just 2.8 seconds. This possible due to its 582BHP per tonne, power to weight ratio. There is 'R' version also available which 35BHP more and 25kgs lighter.

Vuhl 05RR
: This track-ready, road-legal beast produces 400BHP with its weight at 660Kgs (1455lbs). Its top speed is 275kmph (170Mph) and does 0-60 in 2.7 seconds. This is possible due to is 606BHP per tonne power to weight ratio. This is not as expensive as a lot of the others on this list which makes it one of my personal favourites.

Radical RXC 600R
: The RXC600R comes with a Ford EcoBoost V6 3.5L engine which produces 654BHP with a top speed of 180mph. It weighs only 1130kgs. Which means it produces 575BHP per tonne resulting in 2.7 seconds 0-60 time. If I had to pick one from this list without worrying about the sticker price, The Radical would be my first pick.

Ratan Tata’s Revenge for Being Insulted by Ford

Hello and welcome to Sunday night Stories. Today I am going to tell you a lesser known story about the man named Ratan Tata and his revenge, for being insulted by Ford Motor Co. So without any further ado let's dive straight into it.

The word "great" is not the only difference in just "people" and "great people". The story we have, should tell the reason.

The story is about a man named Ratan Tata, the Chairman of TATA Motors. He studied at Cornell and Harvard and started his career shoveling lime stone in the family business on the shop floor of TATA Steel. He soon went up the ladder to become the Chairman of TATA Group and in his 21 year, tenure the revenue grew 40 times and profit grew over 50 times. TATA's business is spread over in 100 countries. They employee 650,000 people and TATA group spends 66% of their profit on charity.

A part of TATA Group is TATA motors and this is the story of Ratan Tata and TATA motors. TATA motors or then known as Telco started in 1945. They built heavy Trucks in collaboration with Daimler Benz. This collaboration ended in 1969. Tata motors decided to expand and make small trucks like 4x4s from the existing technology they had from Daimler Benz. In 1998 they launched a small hatchback car named “Indica’. They had invested a lot of blood sweat and tears in building this car which was Ratan Tata's dream project. But true to their blood line and technology in hand the little family hatch back drove like a truck. The clutch & the steering wheel felt like a truck and it wasn’t very reliable and neither did it have any safety features. It was made out of thick sheet metal used for trucks which made the car very heavy as well.  This dream failed to appeal to its consumers. The response was cold and the market never warmed up to Tata's Indica.

TATA's Board of Directors recommended to cut their loses and suggested selling TATA motors.

Meanwhile Ford had partnered up with Mahindra, another Local Indian car maker, in 1995 but by 1998 it was ready to enter Indian Market independently. This was the time where economy of eastern countries was booming. Growth in the western part of the world was saturated and there was a lot of room for growth in the east.

Ratan Tata arranged a meeting with Bill Ford and his board at Ford in Detroit. Tata was offering to sell TATA Motors to Ford. Ford probably would have been able to use their infrastructure to start producing their own cars, for the eastern countries. This would have reduced Fords expenses and headaches in getting established in the eastern Market. It was a win win for both the companies. But in the three hour long meeting Bill ford and the Ford's board only managed to insult and humiliate Ratan Tata. They asked him why did he invest so much money in developing Indica, when he didn’t know the first thing about the automotive industry. Moreover they added that buying TATA Motors was a favor Ford was doing, implying that Ford doesn't need TATA or Ford isn't really going to benefit from TATA much.

Ratan Tata got on an airplane after the meeting and decided to return to India. But as its said, ‘good insults are the hard to forget’. He took this insult as a motivation and decided not to sell TATA Motors and got back to work. He turned the company around in the next 5 years. TATA Motors started making profits. He expanded the business in several countries and Bought the car company Daewoo Commercial Vehicles and Marcopolo Bus Co.

Now TATA was at its strongest but at the same time 2007-2008, Ford was suffering. And the 2008 recession was like the last nail in the coffin. Ford needed rescuing but their losses and debts were too big for them to even ask the American Government to Bail them out. They needed to down size and sell off bits to reduce the bail out amount.

Ford's biggest loss making companies were Jaguar and Land Rover. Both of these British companies were bought over by ford but ford had tried to run them in a very American commercial way which lead them to incur huge losses.

No one during this down turn, in 2008 was ready to buy, the biggest lost making auto brands that were Jaguar and Land Rover. Bill Ford this time along with his team of board members and lawyers, flies to Bombay House, India to meet Ratan Tata where Ratan Tata offers to buy Jaguar and Land Rover for 2.3 billion U.S. Dollars. In the meeting Bill Ford told Ratan Tata that TATA was doing Ford a huge favor by buying those two companies off of them.

Ford still thought Tata was being stupid, to have bought two ships sunk so deep into the ocean that they cannot resurface, ever. Not only did Tata pull Jaguar and Land Rover out of the losses but both the companies started making profits and got back to the fame they deserved. It was not very hard for Ratan Tata to do this because, all he did was let Jaguar and Land rover go back to their roots and build the cars they were known to build, which Ford didn’t let them do.

No where did Ratan Tata lose his calm or verbally insult or get angry during the meeting.

Ratan Tata said if people throw stones at you, keep all those stones and build a path way to success from them. He could have easily been equally insulting towards Bill Ford in the meeting in Bombay House but he let actions speak louder than words.

TOP: Cheapest Ferraris on the market in 2020

While growing up I remember my first matchbox car, It was a Ferrari F40 made by Maisto. I used it on the hot wheels track and that's how my love for cars began. Later the education about different makes and models came from Need for speed and Need for Speed 2 SE. Growing up in India there were hardly a couple of car manufacturers and these exotics were something I either saw in magazines or in video games. Internet was too new and I was still a kid to think that the internet was cool. I remember the first exotic car I saw (which was not much of an exotic) was a Mazda MX-5 and later a Mitsubishi 3000Gt. I was maybe 12 years old and it was the coolest car ever. But Since 1994, since Schumacher won his first world championship with Benetton I must say I was a Schumacher fan. So when Schumacher joined the Italian outfit in Maranello Ferrari became my dream car like every other kid at that age.

So the question is how expensive are these cars? Well, let's talk about the cheapest Ferraris on the market today. The list I have made is based on www.cars.com, www.autotrader.com, www.classic.autotrader.com and www.craigslist.com. So without any further ado lets dive into Ferraris you can afford without selling your kidneys for it.

The first one on the list is the Ferrari Mondial from the 80s. It had an 8 cylinder 3Litre engine that produced 240BHP with a top speed of 140Mph and 0-60 time of 9 seconds. The Mondial can be picked up between $30,000 to $40,000 with under 50,000 miles on the odometer. But like with any Ferrari its really difficult to tell the accuracy of the mileage shown on the odometer. The cheapest one I came across was $25,995

Next is Mid to late 90s Ferrari F355 which produces 375BHP from its 3.5L V8 and does 0-60 in under 5 seconds. A little vanilla in terms of the looks but with feisty performance. The cheapest one we found was 47,500 but I am sure you can find one cheaper than that if you look harder.

Ferrari 308 is a 1970's classic and in my opinion, looks beautiful. I wouldn't mind having the 308 in my collection. Popup headlights and aggressive styling. This Ferrari without any fancy electronics is a pure drivers car. This 8 cylinder motor 2.9L motor produces 240 BHP like the Mondial but does 0-60 in 7 seconds. You can find one for around $40,000. The cheapest one we found was $38,000. But I believe these would go up in price. So if you are considering one, don't wait too long.

Ferrari 348 is the late-80s, early to mid-90s, Pinnanfarina designed mid-engined V8 sports car with independent all-round suspension. This 3.4L Quadcam v8 produced 300BHP and came with a steel platform and subframe. With pop up headlights and blades to cut the wind on its doors it was and is a very beautiful car that resembled the Italian masterpiece, the Testarossa. The only reason it was frowned upon was because the Acura Nsx launched at the same time which outperformed this sluggish carburated Ferrari in every possible way. The cheapest one we found was $49,000

Ferrari 360 is the newest on this list(in terms of production year) with an aluminium space frame chassis and a 3.6L v8 that produces 400BHP. This Pininfarina designed monster did 0-60 in under 4.5 seconds.
The cheapest one we found was $30,000 but that's rare. Normally they sell for somewhere in the mid to high 40s.

Rise and Fall of Vijay Mallya’s Force India Racing Team

In 2019 Force India wasn't seen at the starting grid and it was because Vijay Mallya, the previous owner was and is in deep trouble over defaulting loans in India and the Team went into administration in mid-2018.
Lance (left) & Lawrence (right)
The team eventually sold to the father of an F1 driver, Lance Stroll. Lawrence Stroll who not only bought his son a seat but the whole F1 team (to make his son's F1 career) leads a group of investors. So buying the team was not a big deal for Lawrence backed by the investors. The team entered as Racing Point F1 Team for 2019, with Lance and Sergio Perez along with him. They got a spectacular team for a bargain and a head start for Lance where he didn't have to start his career at the back of the pack.

Spyker F1
But the story of this team begins in 2007 when Vijay Mallya bought the 'Spyker F1 Team' for approximately 90 Million Euros. He rebranded it 'Force India F1 Team' as he wanted it to be the pride of India. But money alone doesn't solve the problems in F1. Obviously one has to pour the money in but it does require additional blood sweat and tears to bring a team finishing last up the order, to be noticed. It doesn't happen overnight. It takes years of hard work and determination. Which is not visible on tv, once every two weeks, in an hour race.

People often say "To make a small fortune in Formula1 you have to start with a big one" I guess Mallya did just that.

Michiel Mol (left), Vijay Mallys (middle) and Jan Mol (right) with VJM01
The team entered the 2008 F1 world championship in the same flamboyant manner as Mallya himself. Mallya over the next decade showed the most glamorous Formula1 how to party. Mallya threw some of the best parties on his 312ft yacht ‘The Indian Empress’ in Monte Carlo, after all, he is known as 'King of Good Times' for a reason.

Narain Kartikeyan (left) Karun Chandhok (right)
There was excitement because an Indian had never owned an F1 team before. Mallya showed the motorsport world an image of a new rich and flamboyant India. Moreover, for a brief moment, there were hopes of Force India giving Narain Karthikeyan an opportunity as he had run one season with Jordan Team in 2005 and Karun Chandhok an opportunity because he was good and was Mallya's friend's son. Neither drove for Force India.

Eddie Jordan (left) parties with Vijay Mallya (right) on board his 312ft Yacht , 'The Indian Empress'
Vijay wasn't going to take chances especially considering the history of the team where it seemed like the team was Jinxed. I say that because the team has had a history of changing hands. Eddie Jordan owner of Jordan team sold the team to Midland Group in 2005. Midland group competed in 2005 under the Jordan banner. In 2006 the team competed as MidlandF1 racing but it never reached the middle turf as it always finished last. So it again sold and the new owners were the Dutch sports car manufacturer Spyker. It was Spyker F1 team for 2007 season but it remained the same and stood last consistently if they managed to finish the race. Spykar sold the team to Mallya at the end of 2007. Force India's first car for the 2008 season was called VJM01.

It was only natural if the world was sceptical about how things would work out. But Mallya proved the world wrong as the team grew from strength to strength, inch by inch and became a serious midfield competitor. As a constructor, they have triumphed over teams like Williams F1 team, Mclaren, Renault amongst others. And these are teams with more or less an unlimited budget. They achieved fourth in the constructor's championship in 2016 and 2017 seasons.

Force India, on the other hand, had limited budgets. They made maximum use of the money spent. They definitely did not have the budgets like Ferrari or Mclaren. Mallya made sure and was appreciated and recognised by other teams for his efficient operations. Their strategy of starting with a simpler car and upgrading as the season progressed worked.
Adrian Sutil (left) Tonio Liuzzi (middle) and Giancarlo Fisichella (right)
In their first season (2008) they retained Sutil from the Spyker team and got the more experienced Fishichalla whose experience and feedback would help build the team. In 2008 Mallya didn't really put a high target to achieve and wanted to get things in order. Although, Sutil came very close to scoring points at Monaco Grandprix in the rain, but an incident with Kimi drowned those dreams.

In 2009 Mallya struck a deal with Mercedes and swapped the Ferrari engines with Mercedes engines. The biggest achievement of the season was Fisichella on pole at Belgian Grand Prix and finishing second behind Kimi. Definitely, Progress compared to 2008.
Fisichella with Trophy at Belgian GP
In 2009 Fisichella moved to Ferrari and Vitantonio Liuzzi took his place.
Sutil and Liuzzi drove for the team in the 2010 Season and they showed consistent and good results for the team earning the team 68 points and they stood 7th in the constructor's championship. They were no longer the team that stood last.
In 2011 Paul Di Resta replaced Liuzzi and Force India Progress to the 6th place in the constructor's title.

De Resta (Left) Hulkenberg (Right) and VJM01 (Bottom)
For the 2012 Nico Hulkenberg Joined Di Resta. Mallya got Sahara to invest and pick up stake in the Team. The team came close to making it to the podium on several occasions. But Force India finished 7th in the Constructors championship. This was the first time over the years where the team didn't achieve positive progress. Changes needed to be made.
So they brought Sutil back in Force India for 2013 who partnered with Di Resta. The team was manoeuvred back on track and they clenched sixth among the constructors. They were now considered a consistent midfield team. But they had not triumphed.
VJM07 with Sergio Perez (Left) & Nico Hulkenberg (Right) Formula One Testing, Jerez, Spain, Day One, Tuesday, 28 January 2014
2014 brought a lot of changes to F1 technical regulations. This brought a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine over the 2.4 litre naturally aspirated one. Force India did a good job adapting the changes rather quickly with their limited resources. And Vijay Mallya's drivers were achieving the goals which kept the sponsors happy and the lavish parties were like icing on the cake. But 2014 was going to be difficult with an all-new driver line up. Sergio Perez and returning Hulkenberg made the team. The biggest achievement was Perez on the podium at Bahrain Grand Prix. With several 5th and 6th places by the drivers, Force India stood 6th once again on the constructor's table.

VJM08 with Sergio Perez (Left) and Nico Hulkenberg (right)
In 2015 before the championship Force India showed up at testing with their 2014 car and at another testing with a modified previous-gen car. This wasn't looking good. The delay in developing the new car was because they were switching to Toyota's cologne based wind tunnel in Germany. This was going to allow them to use 60% scale models as opposed to the 50% scale they had been using with their old tunnel. So the start of 2015 season could have been much better but the results improved dramatically in the second half of season with their B-Spec car. Highest achievement was Perez on the podium in Russia. And Force India that looked like it was struggling picked up the pace in the second half of the season and stood a strong 5th in the constructor's championship.
VJM09 with Sergio Perez (Left) and Nico Hulkenberg (right)
2016 didn't see any change in the driver line up. Perez stood third twice and Hulkenberg brought home valuable points as well helping Force India achieve 4th place in the championship. Force India was the sponsor's dream team. They made awesome progress year after year consistently.

VJM10 driven by Sergio Perez at Albert Park, Australia
Frenchman Esteban Ocon replaced Hulkenberg in 2017. Perez and Esteban continued the hustle and beat teams like Torro Rosso, Haas, Mclaren, Williams, Renault and Sauber. Force India finished 4th in the championship again.

VJM11 driven by Sergio Perez at Monaco GP
In 2018 Force India was now ready to gear up and compete with the big boys on the front of the grid but the news of Mallya in deep trouble over defaulting of loans in India broke lose. Additional news accused Mally of Money laundering charges. Mallya Absconded from India and never showed up for trial in India. The very promising Force India F1 team went into administration. A group of Businessmen led by Lawrence Stroll bought the assets of the team and changed the name to Racing Point Force India.
But Lawrence Stroll was no Vijay Mallya. Despite the team scoring 59 points before Spa, the team scored 7th place in the championship.
Mallya posing for a picture in front of one of Kingfisher Airline planes
So let's take a deeper dive in what really happened in 2018. While Force India was on an upward graph, enjoying a successful stint, things were getting worse for Mallya. Whilst Sahara Group has stopped playing a management role a while ago there were rumours of no money flowing in too. Mallya still was responsible for all major decisions being the majority stakeholder of the team. But Mallya's troubles were on the rise with financial and legal battles arising out of his defunct Kingfisher Airlines. At this point, Mallya absconded from India to England. At this point normally Indian banks come to a settlement amount and negotiation takes place as they want to recover whatever they can. But 1. Mallya's loans were big 2. Mallya was a politician. Neither the banks or the government was ready to help. No settlement opportunity was offered to Mallya. This was something Mallya didn't expect. Banks along with the government of India started extradition proceedings to recover $1 billion in loans given to Kingfisher Airlines on Mallya's personal guarantee. While in the midst of this, He lost hold of his Unites Spirits Empire to Diageo. At the same time, Heineken started buying the stock of United breweries and increased its shareholdings.
Mallya outside Westminister Magistrates Court surrounded by reporters.
This mammoth of a sandstorm was sooner rather than later blow over Force India. But no one expected the Indian Banks or the government to pursue the money from Mallya the way they did. It took F1 by a little bit of a surprise because Mallya seemed calm and relaxed on the grid till it actually happened and the team went into administration. Mallya who was known to grab the bull by its horns was now taking things as they came as he was no longer in control of the situation as problems were erupting from every direction. The team started the 2018 season on the back foot (same as always) and improved its way up the pack in the first half. Now financial difficulties were being evident to the team as well. This was now delaying the development of the new upgrades. A petition was started by a supplier and Perez who were owed millions in unpaid dues. This put the team under administration in a bid to rescue it. The team, including drivers, felt that they needed new investment which was just not possible with Mallya. This panned out with a consortium led by Williams F1 driver Lance and his father Lawrence Stroll acquiring the team and adding Racing Point in the front of the name. So Force India was known as Racing Point Force India for the remaining season and later as Just Racing Point. Lawrence wanted to purchase the team outright and buy Force India's entry but this agreement would have required approval from banks that Mallya owed money to. Therefore only assets were purchased by Racing Point. Force India was a very promising team and enjoyed a successful tenure of ten years. Force India and Mallya commanded presence like no other.
Racing Point F1 team with Lawrence Stroll (middle)

Racing Point Stood 7th in the constructor's championship in 2019 too. 2019 was the first whole year without Vijay Mallya. It was painful to see Force India disappear from Formula1. It was as painful as seeing Eddie Jordan sell-off Jordan Racing Team.

Vijay Mallya's assets including his mansions, his Yacht and his cars were all auctioned off. Mallya is still is battling in the British courts, not to be extradited. British courts are not in a rush because sending Mallya back means losing 1Billion GBP from their own economy.
